One thing I especially liked about this article was the quote from James Porter in which he describes the act of writing as an exercise of power. I thought that was great to think of writing something as power. I like that idea because that’s the way I think of writing sometimes too. If I am writing a story for instance I have the power to make a character do whatever I want…and in fact I have the power to create the character in the first place.

I thinks it’s funny how Wysocki talks about all of his books saying a paper should be 8 by 11 with 1 inch margins. I agree with him that is so overplayed and there has never been a real reason for why that is the standard. It reminds me actually of a book I am reading now, Requiem For A Dream by Hubert Selby Jr. Hubert refuses to use apostrophes on contractions unless they could be confused with another word like “I’ll” could be confused with “ill”, but even then he uses a slash instead, “I\ll.” I think Hubert is a great example of how we dont always have to follow the rules.

The part where Wysocki said “now imagine you’re reading this online” made me chuckle. He’s writing about new material and didn’t think that someone actually could be reading it his book online. But he does go on and say a lot of other examples, and I agree with him that the way the material is presented will define how it is looked at.

This is why I love the new media like the internet. There really has yet to be any set standards. I am sure people will try to set standards for it, but anyone can publish a website and choose to create it however they want.
